California bishops and death penalty

Posted on October 7, 2010 by Vincent Augustine D'Souza

California bishops are opposed to death penalty. They think life imprisonment without parole is an alternative to death penalty. They are wrong.

California bishops should look at Mexico and how things have gone wrong after Mexico stopped death penalty. Murders have shot up. Lives of ordinary people are not safe. Even lives of priests are not safe.

Christianity is not against death penalty. St. Thomas Aquinas justified death penalty. Jesus Christ was in favour of death penalty when he said if anyone causes little ones to sin a millstone shall be hung around his neck and he should be thrown into the sea. For a long time the church has put heretics to death.

Murders, not honour killings

Posted on May 18, 2010 by Vincent Augustine D'Souza

Murder is murder whoever commits it for whatever reason. Murder does not become honour killing because murderers think a marriage was against the honour of family or community.
Many times people in media talk of honour killings. They persist even after they are told that they are murders.

Death to terrorist

Posted on May 8, 2010 by Vincent Augustine D'Souza

On 6/5/2010 special sessions judge M. L. Tahaliyani sentenced Ajmal Kasab to death on five counts. People in general expected death penalty and were happy at the judgment. Public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam was on all channels.
The death penalty has to be confirmed by the High Court. Thereafter it can be challenged in the Supreme Court. After that mercy petition can be filed. Pratibha Patil does not want to reject any mercy petition and with her as president there is no hope of Ajmal Kasab being put to death.
As of now mercy petitions are decided on a monthly basis, one case at a time. Home Ministry advised rejection of two mercy petitions. Pratibha Patil did not do that. It may take more than two years to dispose of the present pending cases.

Supreme Court and prostitution

Posted on December 12, 2009 by Vincent Augustine D'Souza

“When you say it is the world’s oldest profession and when you are not able to curb it by laws, why don’t you legalise it? You can then monitor the trade, rehabilitate and provide of medical aid to those involved in the trade.
They have been operating in one way or the other and nowhere in the world have they been able to curb it by legislation. In some cases, they are carried out in a sophisticated manner. So why don’t you legalise it?” Justice Dalveer Bhandari and Justice A. K. Patnaik asked Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam. Gopal Subramaniam said he would look into it.

New Jersey and death penalty

Posted on December 17, 2007 by Vincent Augustine D'Souza

The decision of New Jersey legislature to abolish death penalty is bad. The Senate voted 21-16 and the Assembly voted 44-36 for abolition. A commission had given three reasons for abolition: 1) Death penalty was a more expensive sentence than life in prison. 2) Death penalty hasn’t deterred murder. 3) Death penalty could kill innocent…

I received two comments for my article “UN General Assembly and death penalty”. The Writers questioned the source for my statement “Every death penalty for murder prevents three to eighteen murders.” The source is an Associated Press report dt. 11 June 2007 that can be accessed on www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19160965. The report points to a series of…

UN General Assembly and death penalty

It is bad that a committee of UN General Assembly voted in favour of a resolution for suspension of death penalty worldwide: 99 countries voted in favour of the resolution, 52 against and 33 abstained. European countries, mainly Italy, led the charge against death penalty. Murders take place all over Europe. Mafia is active in…
