Konkani (Konknni) was recognized as a language by Kendra Sahitya Akademi in 1975. It became the official language of Goa in 1987. In 1992 it was included in the 8th schedule of the Constitution of India. Some years later Union Public Service Commission allowed it as a medium of examination. It is 6th of the 15 languages that appear on Indian currency notes.
Some people are ignorant of these facts and say Konkani is not a language as it does not have a script. The world has around 10,000 languages and 65 scripts. Most of the languages do not have a script that they can call their own. English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German and many other languages use Roman script. Some of them have used additional letters or diacritical marks. Slavic languages mostly use Cyrilic script. Hindi and Marathi use Devanagari script. Urdu script is derived by adding seven letters to Arabic script’s 28. Does it mean English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, Hindi, Marathi and Urdu are not languages?
