Jaipur blasts have once again exposed India’s vulnerability to terror attacks. One reason why terrorist attacks take place frequently in India is there is no proportionate punishment for the crime. People are killed and murderers live for years.
There should be no bandh as it causes inconvenience to people and does not affect terrorists.
The Supreme Court’s judgment in 1980 restricting death penalty to rarest of rare cases has resulted in many murderers losing fear and committing crimes. The Supreme Court encroached upon the sphere of legislature. Till then terrorism was unheard of in India. After that there was terrorism in Punjab, Assam, Kashmir and many other places. Presidents K. R. Narayanan, A. P. J. Abdul Kalam and Pratibha Patil’s actions in not rejecting mercy petitions, except in one case, have further emboldened criminals including terrorists.
India must have a law that makes it obligatory to award death penalty to every case of murder, hijacking, kidnapping, terrorism, acid throwing, great financial fraud, character assassination and such great crimes.
After 9/11 USA did not have any terrorist attack of significant nature. India needs to do better in preventing crimes.
Criminals need to be punished swiftly. There is no law do deal with terrorism. Judicial process takes a long time. Even after someone is found guilty and sentenced to death by Supreme Court he/she appeals for clemency and lives for a long time.
Pratibha Patil should reject all mercy petitions pending with her immediately.
