Thoughts on 7/10/2007

Posted on October 7, 2007 by Vincent Augustine D'Souza

Marion Jones won five medals, three of them gold, in Sydney Olympics 2000. At that time she was tested and drugs were not detected. On 5/10/2007 she admitted to taking performance enhancing drugs. Many take drugs. Some get caught soon. Others are not caught. Some win medals and keep them. Some are exposed later. At…

Cousins

Posted on May 24, 2007 by Vincent Augustine D'Souza

Many times I come across the wrong usage “cousin brother” or “cousin sister”. There are cousins and not “cousin brother” or “cousin sister”. It is too bad when such usage appears on newspapers or TV channels. Those who have same grandparents but different parents are first cousins. Those who have same great grandparents but different…

Reservations

Posted on April 25, 2007 by Vincent Augustine D'Souza

Right is right even though nobody is right. Wrong is wrong even though everybody is wrong.

If Parliament passes a law that is unjust it does not become right.

In Delhi and many other cities students had opposed reservations. It is likely that in future political parties opposed to reservations will come up.

Posted on March 12, 2007 by Vincent Augustine D'Souza

Women are equal to men. Legal position regarding women differs from country to country.

If the law discriminates against women it is for women to fight against such law.

Every person is known by name. Gender Justice has to begin with name. A married man does not change his name. In many societies women change their names and/or surnames after marriage. Women must retain their maiden names after marriage.

Thoughts on 25/1/2007

Posted on January 25, 2007 by Vincent Augustine D'Souza

Jayalalitha could not contest elections and could not be chief minister because the lower court had found her guilty. Navjot Singh Sidhu is found guilty by High Court. Supreme Court has stayed the sentence and conviction and praised him for resigning. Navjot Singh Sidhu wants to contest the election to be MP of Amritsar, the seat that became vacant due to his resignation. Elections cost lot of money and time. Those who resign should not be allowed to contest the seat again for the remainder of the term. Sonia Gandhi and Chandrashekhara Rao had done it. The persons who resign should be made to reimburse the expenses on elections. No candidate should be allowed to contest two seats at one time. Once elected as MP or MLA the person should not be able to hold any other office for the duration of the term except President or Vice President of India or Governor of an Indian State.
