On 9/2/2010 Jairam Ramesh, Minster for Environment and Forests, announced his decision to withhold permission to cultivate Bt brinjal in India. He said there was no consensus among scientists about the effects of Bt brinjal. If consensus emerges in favour of Bt brinjal it will be allowed to be cultivated.
Jairam Ramesh had held discussions in some cities regarding Bt brinjal. The discussions witnessed lot of shouting.
There was opposition to Bt brinjal from various quarters, some for political reasons. Swadeshi Jagran Manch opposed Bt brinjal. Soon BJP ruled states followed suit. There was opposition from some other states including Andhra Pradesh, ruled by Congress.
There is more passion than reason in debates about Bt brinjal. Some oppose anything that is new and foreign so they oppose Bt brinjal. Some are opposed to anything that is genetically modified so they oppose Bt brinjal.
Bt brinjal does not require pesticides and has other advantages. Some say local brinjal can be cultivated without pesticides.
Why governments have to get involved in matters of cultivation of vegetables? It should be left to farmers. Let farmers individually decide what they want to do. At one time there was resistance to Bt cotton. Now it is widely cultivated.
