Two Elizabeths rule UK. One is Queen Elizabeth II. Second is Mary Elizabeth Truss, popularly known as Liz Truss.
Elizabeth II was born on 21/4/1926. Her full name is Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor. She became queen on 6/2/1952. Many European royals who became monarchs after her abdicated in their old age. Elizabeth II has no intention to abdicate. She considers queenship is service for life.
Liz Truss was born on 26/7/1975. It is almost two generations gap between her and the queen. Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson announcing his resignation paved the way for contest of leadership of Conservative and Unionist Party and Prime Ministership which she won. When many ministers resigned from Boris Johnson’s cabinet she continued as Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs. She had Boris Johnson’s support in her contest against Rishi Sunak.
Mary is last name of Elizabeth II and first name of Liz Truss. We can also say two Marys rule UK.
Elizabeth II has seen Prime Ministers come and go. Winston Churchill, Anthony Eden, Harold Macmillan, Alexander Douglas-Home, Harold Wilson, Edward Heath, James Callaghan, Margaret Thatcher, John Major, Anthony Blair, James Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson came and went. Harold Wilson was PM twice. Many i.e., Anthony Blair, David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson were born after she became queen.
Elizabeth II is 96 and not in good health. Next UK Parliament election is due in January 2025. We have to see how long two Elizabeths rule UK.
The queen has had a long innings. Awestruck by the number of PMs who came and went under her watch.
