Death of Osama Bin Laden

The news of the death of Osama Bin Laden on 2/5/2011 (1/5/2011 in USA) in Abbottabad brought cheers to Americans and there were celebrations outside White House and Ground Zero. Barack Obama said it was a historic day for America and justice has been done. Osama Bin Laden was not hiding in some remote mountain but in a building next to military academy, or 500-800 metres away from military academy, in a city. America wanted Osama Bin Laden dead or alive for almost a decade. The building was a mansion without telephone or internet and with 12-16 feet walls built in 2005. For long Americans bombed Waziristan and some areas in Afghanistan hoping to kill Osama Bin Laden. Perhaps they were misled.

Osama Bin Laden could not have remained in Pakistan without Pakistani army’s support. Many terrorists are trained in Pakistan. Pakistan had denied that Osama Bin Laden was living in Pakistan. There were long periods when nothing was heard of Osama Bin Laden and sometimes it was thought that he was dead.

Did Pakistan know about the operation by Navy Seals and CIA against Osama Bin Laden? One view is that the operation could not have been carried out without some involvement of ISI or Pakistani armed forces. Pakistan has not claimed any credit to avoid repercussions from its people and terrorists. Another view is that if Pakistan knew about it Osama Bin Laden would have been tipped off. In the past USA had shared intelligence with Pakistan and Osama Bin Laden had escaped by the skin of teeth. When the helicopters took off USA jammed Pakistani radars. Osama Bin Laden was killed. His body was taken to Bagram. It is said that Saudi Arabia refused to accept his body. Osama Bin Laden was buried at sea to avoid his tomb becoming a shrine for his followers.

When USSR invaded Afghanistan in 1979 many Arabs went there to fight the Russians. USA trained them. Osama Bin Laden was in Afghanistan. He founded Al Qaeda. In 1989 USSR withdrew from Afghanistan. Osama Bin Laden started to target USA. Blowing up of American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998 invited retaliation from USA. He survived missile attack. When 9/11 happened Osama Bin Laden had celebrated. Americans bombed Afghanistan and deposed Taliban. They bombed Tora Bora to kill Osama Bin Laden but he had escaped, presumably with the help of Pakistani military. Over the years Al Qaeda was weakened.

Pervez Musharraf claims USA violated Pakistani sovereignty. When he was president he allowed USA to have bases in Pakistan.

India wants Pakistan to hand over terrorists wanted for 26/11 and so far Pakistan has not obliged. The terrorists are freely moving in Pakistan. It is unlikely that India will do what USA did. India’s policy has been inconsistent. Sometimes it is said no talks with Pakistan till cross border terrorism is stopped and people wanted in India are handed over to India. Sometimes it is said talks will go on irrespective of terrorism and there is no alternative to talks. There was cricket diplomacy. India is unable to act tough even with Somali pirates.

Breaking News is when the news breaks out during a bulletin and till the next headlines and can not be for more than one hour in any case. It is ridiculous to show something as Breaking News after 12 hours or more. NDTV 24×7, BBC, CNN, CNN-IBN and some other channels should take note of that.

US court and India

A US court in New York has issued summons to Kamal Nath to appear before it to answer charges of involvement in killing Sikhs in 1984 in a suit filed by Sikhs for Justice. The group has charged Congress with attacks on Sikhs. Why Kamal Nath is summoned and why not Sajjan Kumar or Jagdish Tytler is not known. H. K. L. Bhagat, known for his role in killing Sikhs, is dead.

US courts do not have jurisdiction over India. If they claim to have jurisdiction over India on some principle it is time for India to reciprocate. Suits must be filed against Americans in Indian courts. George H. W. Bush, William Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and others must be summoned for killings of civilians in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and other places.

Many riots have taken place in India and most of the times victims have not got justice. Many victims of Sikh terrorism did not get justice. That does not mean other countries can try Indians for crimes committed in India.

Who are members of Sikhs for Justice? Why did they file a case in New York? Why did the court admit the case?

In Guantanamo Bay prisoners are held for years without trial.

Courts should not overstep their jurisdiction. Otherwise there will be anarchy.

No negotiations with criminals

India should have a policy of no negotiations with criminals whether they are terrorists, abductors, kidnappers, hijackers, pirates or Maoists. The policy should be followed by central and state governments. The policy should be irrespective of who the hostage is. The hostage may be a minister’s daughter, engineer, doctor, collector, truck driver or someone else. It does not matter whether there is one hostage or there are many hostages. When the policy of no negotiations is declared and followed there will be no pressure on any government.

Since December 1989 when Rubiya Sayeed was abducted and five terrorists were released there have been many cases when India has surrendered to criminals and released prisoners or paid ransom. In recent years Maoists have abducted many people and state governments have released prisoners. The abductions continue.

In December 1999 a hijacked plane was allowed to take off from Amritsar and go to Kandahar. Three terrorists were released who caused many deaths later on.

According to a police officer, DGP Dinakaran, 20 crore rupees were paid as ransom to Veerappan when Rajkumar was abducted. He had said chief minister paying ransom is misconduct and not official secret. There was demand to release prisoners and it would have been met had not one retired police officer whose son had died in an encounter with Veerappan gang had gone to court and stopped it. The Government of Karnataka argued in Supreme Court that if the prisoners were not released there would be a law and order problem. The bench headed by S. P. Bharucha did not allow release of prisoners. The government was told if you cannot control you quit.

Many times criminals dictate who should be mediators and these mediators are their associates.
Sometimes TV channels show members of families of hostages crying. Once Vinod Mehta of Outlook said to Vikram Chandra of NDTV showing tears is pornography.

One instance when India did not surrender to terrorists was during 26/11. Whether there was any negotiation for sometime is debatable but there was no surrender and the terrorists were shot dead.

India should undo its mistakes. Criminals beginning with Rubiya Sayeed abduction case who demanded release of prisoners or ransom should be prosecuted. Rubiya Sayeed should be questioned about her abduction. All prisoners released should be asked to surrender within seven days failing which they should be declared fugitives dead or alive. S. M. Krishna who was chief minister of Karnataka must make public how 20 crore rupees were collected.
