National Highway 39

National Highway 39 in Manipur has been blocked by some Nagas since 11/4/2010. Prices have shot up in Manipur. Life has become difficult. Manipur government has done nothing to stop the blockade. Indian government has done nothing to stop the blockade.
National Highway 53 also came under blockade. However some suppliers were brought through under escort some days back.
It is the duty of the state government to maintain law and order. When the state government fails central government has to intervene.
India wants a seat as permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations. It is unable to ensure transport of goods within its territory.
Over the years many who blocked transport were dealt with leniently. Gujjars were let off easily. They caused havoc for several days. NH 39 blockade has gone on for too long. It look India is worse than a banana republic.
Manipur government must be told to put an end to blockade. People who block must be told to end the blockade. If they do not stop the blockade, force must be used to remove them from the place.
There must be tough punishment for blockade. It should not be less than 50 years imprisonment.

Murders, not honour killings

Murder is murder whoever commits it for whatever reason. Murder does not become honour killing because murderers think a marriage was against the honour of family or community.
Many times people in media talk of honour killings. They persist even after they are told that they are murders.
One anchor once said that there is no law against honour killings. There are laws against murder, conspiracy to murder and abetment to murder. They are enough. There is no need to categorise some murders as honour killings and have separate law for them. There is death penalty for murder and no punishment is higher than that. It is a different matter that death penalty is given in rarest of rare cases and presidents do not reject mercy petitions.
People in media should call these murders what they are and stop referring to them as honour killings.
It is said that Law Ministry is considering bringing a law against honour killings. There is no need for such a law. Law Ministry should consider bringing a law that makes death penalty obligatory for every murder.
For years murderers of couples who fell in love and married escaped punishment due to lack of evidence and witnesses did not come forward. Now some have got death penalty and khap panchayats of Haryana want to change the law to ban marriage within clans or villages. They have got some political support. Some who are not known to be scientific minded went on to defend khap panchayats saying the marriages sought to be banned are scientifically and medically wrong.
It is a pity that Navin Jindal, Congress MP from Kurukshetra, agreed to be the post man of khap panchayats. His party did not agree with khap panchayats’ demands.

Death to terrorist

On 6/5/2010 special sessions judge M. L. Tahaliyani sentenced Ajmal Kasab to death on five counts. People in general expected death penalty and were happy at the judgment. Public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam was on all channels.
The death penalty has to be confirmed by the High Court. Thereafter it can be challenged in the Supreme Court. After that mercy petition can be filed. Pratibha Patil does not want to reject any mercy petition and with her as president there is no hope of Ajmal Kasab being put to death.
As of now mercy petitions are decided on a monthly basis, one case at a time. Home Ministry advised rejection of two mercy petitions. Pratibha Patil did not do that. It may take more than two years to dispose of the present pending cases.
K. R. Narayanan did not clear any file regarding mercy petitions when he was President. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam decided on two mercy petitions: one he rejected, another he commuted.
Congress blames BJP for pending mercy petitions during 1998-2004. Congress came to power in 2004. What did it do till 2009? Why one case per month? Why cann’t all petitions be rejected at once?
TV channels should be careful about the words they use. Referring to criminals who plan and carry out terrorist acts as generals and foot soldiers is wrong. Getting someone to talk against death penalty is out of place.
One person whose wife was murdered during 26/11 terrorist attack said he had moved on. His wife was killed in Taj Mahal Hotel. The terrorist who killed his wife was killed by commandos. I wonder whether the feeling would have been the same if the terrorist who killed his wife was alive.
India has witnessed many terror attacks. More people died in 11/7 railway blasts than in 26/11 attack. Not much is known about the accused and when the trial will take place.
There are reports of RSS men being involved in Ajmer and other blasts. Hope politics will not overshadow trials.
