Economic Traitor

Praful Patel is an economic traitor. As civil aviation minister his actions have led Air India to loss and disaster.

There was Indian Airlines. Praful Patel changed its name to Indian. That did not make any difference for better. Then Indian Airlines was merged with Air India. The merger was supposed to save money. Things went from bad to worse.

Air India suffered. Private airlines prospered. For months some of them did not pay fuel bills. During IPL Air India passengers had to wait for hours as scheduled flights were delayed to fly IPL teams.

When private airlines increased fares Praful Patel did not tell passengers to fly Air India. He told private airlines to reduce fair and threatened them if they did not do so. What is Praful Patel’s problem if private airlines charge “astronomical” fares? Why cann’t Air India use this opportunity? Air India could have gained. It needs thousands of crores of rupees to keep going.

Praful Patel has asked for extra 3,500 crore rupees for Air India and has warned of strikes by Air India employees if wages are recast. Air India has an accumulated loss of 7,200 crore rupees and working capital loans of around 18,000 crore rupees. Praful Patel is responsible for the mess. He should warn the employees that if they do not agree for recasting of wages Air India may be wound up. Some years back air traffic controllers who created problems by strike or work-to-rule were sacked. Former employees of Air India should not have perks.

People’s money should not be wasted on Air India. If there is no possibility of improvement without spending further money it should be privatised or wound up. Employees who go on strike can find jobs somewhere else. Praful Patel should not continue as minister.

Sunil Gavaskar and BCCI

Sunil Gavaskar claims BCCI owes him money. BCCI disputes the claim. Sunil Gavaskar says he has not demanded dues from BCCI but has sent gentle reminders. If someone says I will pay you X and I say no and he says I will pay you X + Y and I say yes it is not a demand. The payment regards to membership of IPL Governing Council. How much was X and how much was Y? It seems X was one crore rupees per year and Y was four crore rupees per year. X was in writing. Y was promised orally by Sharad Pawar, then BCCI president. How to deliver Y was not decided because of logistics.

M. A. K. Pataudi and Ravi Shastri were also members of IPL Governing Council. When BCCI decided not to make payments to cricketer members M. A. K. Pataudi and Sunil Gavaskar chose to quit and Ravi Shastri chose to continue. How much M. A. K. Pataudi and Ravi Shastri were paid?

What were the logistics to deliver Y? Payment by cheque would have resulted in taxes. M. A. K. Pataudi and Ravi Shastri could have demanded equal payment. Paying four crore rupees of BCCI money in cash is not an easy thing. It can not be done by few vouchers.

Why did Sunil Gavaskar keep quiet all these years? Why did he not collect Y amount when Sharad Pawar was BCCI president? Shashank Manohar is not bound by oral commitments made by his predecessors. Sharad Pawar is not in a position to influence BCCI. His enemy Jagmohan Dalmiya is in favour with BCCI.

Sunil Gavaskar expects Sharad Pawar to hold a meeting with Shashank Manohar, possibly in Nagpur. A meeting is not necessary to tell that there was an oral commitment.

Fall of Lalit Modi

Lalit Modi is wanted. He built up IPL and got lot of money for BCCI. All was well till he tweeted about Kochi IPL franchise and put Shashi Tharoor in trouble. BJP wanted Shashi Tharoor out from cabinet. Shashi Tharoor being a Congress member had to resign. If he had been a member of DMK or NCP it could have been different.

Congress would have its revenge. There was pressure on BCCI. BCCI suspended Lalit Modi. Lalit Modi was defiant. He did not quit. Court cases followed. BCCI reconstituted IPL Governing Council and Lalit Modi was out of IPL and BCCI.

There was blue corner notice against Lalit Modi. On 10/10/2010 Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab were out of IPL. Officially it was for irregularities. Unofficially they had connection to Lalit Modi.
Enforcement Directorate has asked passport office to revoke Lalit Modi’s passport. There is speculation that Lalit Modi may get another country’s passport. Maqbool Fida Husain was hounded by hooligans in India and he took Qatari citizenship. Lalit Modi is hounded by the government.

Jagmohan Dalmiya made money for BCCI. Taking on Sharad Pawar proved costly to him. Lalit Modi is paying the price for taking on a Congress member.

It will not be difficult for Lalit Modi to get residency or citizenship of a country that will not extradite him to India. Roman Polanski is wanted in USA and safe in France. He was arrested in Switzerland and got out. Lockerbie bomber got out of UK by getting a medical certificate that he had three months to live. If Lalit Modi gets a safe place he can organize a tournament that will rival IPL.
