There have been many helicopter crashes in India and abroad. Questions are raised after crashes. Many times there are no satisfactory answers.
On 8/12/2021 a Mi17V5 helicopter carrying 14 persons including Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat crashed near Coonoor. It was in service since 2012. It was supposed to be safest.
On 2/9/2009 helicopter carrying 5 persons including Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy crashed in Nallamala Hill.
On 30/4/2011 helicopter carrying 5 persons including Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu crashed in a mountain between Kyela and Nobothang.
On 3/3/2002 helicopter carrying 3 persons including Lok Sabha Speaker G. M. C. Balayogi crashed in Kaikalur.
It is said there is a protocol for helicopter flying for important politicians, chief ministers and defence personnel. Helicopter is checked before each flight. Yet crashes take place, some of them while flying over forests. It is not known what is done when visibility is poor.
Strange is the case of helicopter crash on 22/11/1963 in Poonch area. That helicopter carried Lt. Gen. Daulat Singh, Air Vice Marshal Erlic Pinto, Lt. Gen. Bikram Singh, Major General K. N. D. Nanavati, Brigadier S. R. Oberoi and Flight Lieutenant S. S. Sodhi. It went to Jhalas and was on way to Surankote when it crashed near Poonch river.
Another helicopter carried Air Commodore Murat Singh and Flight Lieutenant Lalwani. It went straight to Surankote.
Same day an IAF Dakota plane crashed near Banihal pass killing Flying Officer S. S. Sidhu, Pilot Officers D. Gupta, V. K. Sahasrabudhe, M. V. Singh and four civilians.
It is the day which is most remembered for assassination of John F. Kennedy. Aldous Huxley and Clive Stapes Lewis died that day.
