On 11/8/2008 Abhinav Bindra won gold medal in 10m air rifle shooting in Beijing Olympics.
He became the first Indian to win a gold medal in an individual event in Olympics.
India had won gold medal in hockey eight times.
K. Jadhav, Leander Paes and Karnam Malleswari had won bronze medals.
Rajyavardhan Singh had won silver medal.
India has a gold medal in Olympics after 28 years.
In 1984, 1988 and 1992 we did not have any Olympic medal.
In 1996 and 2000 we had one bronze medal each and in 2004 silver medal.
I was hoping for at least one bronze medal in Beijing Olympics.
We have got one gold medal.
Air rifle shooting is an expensive sport.
Not many people in India can afford it.
Air rifles are imported from Germany and Italy.
Ammunition is costly.
Chances of many people taking to air rifle shooting are remote.
We do not know what the future holds for India but a beginning has been made.
Congratulations Abhinav Bindra.
By coincidence India lost the Colombo Test and the series in Sri Lanka on 11/8/2008.
There was hope that Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman may repeat their feat against Australia at Eden Gardens in 2001 but that turned into disappointment.
