Kashmir Burning

Three months back Kashmir was peaceful. There were not many reports in TV news channels about Kashmir. A minister told TV news channels to report good things that happen in Kashmir. After that Kashmir changed.

After three months of violence there was all-party meeting in Delhi on 15/9/2010. It decided to send an all-party delegation to Kashmir.

AFSPA is a contentious issue. Some want to dilute it. Army is against dilution. Army is called when state police and paramilitary forces fail to control the situation. There was talk of withdrawing AFSPA from four districts of J&K. Increased violence made it impossible.

NC wants autonomy for Jammu & Kashmir. BJP is opposed to autonomy. Congress has not taken any stand.

Some want legitimate aspirations of Kashmiris be addressed and unconditional talks. Some Kashmiris want independence. Is that a legitimate aspiration? It is India’s size that has deterred Western countries from meddling in Kashmir. We know what they did in Serbia and how Kosovo came about. In BBC’s hardtalk the anchor who questioned Serbia’s foreign minister was arrogant. She said big countries like USA, UK and France have recognised Kosovo and Serbia is in the company of countries like Iran and Azerbaijan. She did not mention Russia, China, India and Brazil which have not recognised Kosovo. Around two thirds of the countries have not recognised Kosovo. China is showing interest in Kashmir. It did not issue visa to a Lt. Gen. who serves in Kashmir. Some Kashmiris want Pakistan to be invited for talks. Kashmiri Pandits have been out of Kashmir for two decades. What about their legitimate aspirations? People of Ladakh and Jammu do not want to separate from India. Many people in Leh lost their houses in a flood. Sufficient attention is not paid to them.

There are leaders in Kashmir who are behind protests and violence. They tell Kashmiris to boycott schools and colleges while their children study outside the state, some in foreign countries. When protestors engage in stone pelting and arson security forces can not be mute spectators. Policemen who do not do their duty should be punished.

In the past many crimes in Kashmir have gone unpunished. It is time to start the process and punish the guilty.

Punishment has to be there for people who rigged 1987 elections.

People who abducted Rubia Sayeed need to be punished. Tavleen Singh has mentioned Yasin Malik as abductor. The role of a mediator was questionable.

People who abducted Doraiswamy need to be punished.

Those in the army and paramilitary forces who killed civilians and passed them off as terrorists need to be punished.

People who spread rumours and incite people to violence need to be punished.

When trouble makers know the long arm of the law will not fall short in catching them they will desist from criminal activities.

Colours of terror

Chidambaram spoke of saffron terror. Some joined issue by saying terror has no colour.

However one describes terror by a particular group there are people who object to the nomenclature. Some speak of Jehadi/Islamic/Islamist terror. Some speak of Hindu/ Hindutva/ Saffron terror. Some speak of Maoist/Naxal/Red terror. There was Khalistani terror. There is terror in Kashmir and North-East India. There is Marathi terror which has forced multiplex owners to show Marathi films at prime time at reduced rates.

Some want saffron terror to be ignored because it is on a small scale and done by amateurs. They show their true colours. Some say saffron is a colour of valour and it is on national flag. They do not mention that some people arrested for terrorist acts wore saffron.

Someone has gone to court and filed a defamation case against Chidambaram for the use of the phrase saffron terror. Living persons are defamed. It is strange that a colour can be defamed and someone can file a defamation case on behalf of the colour.

For the victims of terror it does not matter who is the perpetrator of crime. Sikhs were victims of terror in 1984 in Delhi. Muslims were victims of terror in 2002 in Gujarat. Christians were victims of terror in 2008 in Orissa and Karnataka. The perpetrators were Hindus. Sikh terrorists who wanted Khalistan killed many Hindus and Sikhs and sometimes people of other religions. Hindu terrorists belonging to ULFA have killed many Hindus. In Kashmir Muslim terrorists have killed Hindus and Muslims.

Sometimes victims of terror are punished and criminals go scot-free. T. J. Joseph a victim of terror. Who had forgiven the criminals who had cut off his hand is sacked by his college. Kothamangalam diocese’s decision is outrageous. Fr. Thomas Malekudy, manager of Newman College where T. J. Joseph served, has said “The management was forced to dismiss him because he failed to withdraw the question paper, which insulted the Prophet. It is up to the Muslim community to forgive Joseph for his crime. If the Muslim community exonerates him, we will think about taking him back. He is also free to move the court.”

Sr. Stella, sister of T. J. Joseph, has said T. J. Joseph has apologised many times. T. J. Joseph must move court. The basis for sacking was unjustified. What does Fr. Thomas Malekudy mean by Muslim community? Is it Popular Front of India? Newman College is a Catholic institute. T. J. Joseph did not commit any crime that is punishable under Canon Law. Is Newman College governed by Shariat? Why is the bishop of Kothamangalam quiet? Why has he not told the college management to revoke the dismissal? Why is the Major Archbishop of Ernakulam Angamaly quiet? Fr. Thomas Malekudy is like Sr. Sebastina who sacked Ruchika Girhotra, a victim of molestation. Education Minister of Kerala, a CPI M led government has condemned the decision to sack T. J. Joseph. Fr. Thomas Malekudy must apologise to T. J. Joseph and revoke the dismissal.

BJP and Shiv Sena wanted tough line against terror and Afzal Guru hanged. Nitin Gadkari had asked why there is delay in hanging Afzal Guru, is he a son-in-law of Congress? UPA government recommended rejection of Afzal Guru’s mercy petition over two months back. Pratibha Patil has not rejected of Afzal Guru’s mercy petition. Why are BJP and Shiv Sena quiet? Is Shiv Sena quiet because Pratibha Patil is a Marathi Manoos?

Death of Lucas Tete

On 2/9/2010 TV channels reported that Maoists had murdered Abhay Prasad Yadav. On 3/9/2010 the body of the dead person was identified as that of Lucas Tete.

Bihar’s police had an encounter with Maoists on 29/8/2010 which resulted in the death of eight policemen and capture of four policemen by Maoists. It is not known how they were captured. Perhaps they ran out ammunition. Perhaps they got separated from their colleagues. Perhaps someone betrayed them. Policemen fighting gunbattles should have protective gear from head to soles. They should have bulletproof helmet, visor, armour, trousers and shoes.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is responsible for Lucas Tete’s death. He did not join central government and governments of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa and West Bengal in fight against Maoists. He did not order police operations against Maoists in Bihar. He spoke of development. He did not want speedy trial of Maoists in jail.

ERF, CRPF and other policemen got killed in West Bengal, Jharkhand and other states. Nitish Kumar was complacent. He did not prepare for Maoist attacks. In other states there were actions against Maoists. It became difficult for them. Bihar was easy.

CRPF men wanted 24 hours notice to take part in operation against Maoists. That saved them from being killed or captured.

Maoists wanted release of eight prisoners in exchange for release of four policemen. They set deadlines and killed one. There are further deadlines for the remaining policemen.

Nitish Kumar said he is helpless. In that case he should quit and let someone takeover and do the job. Maoists should be told for every policeman you murder we will hang two Maoists.

India should have a policy of no negotiation with terrorists. That will put an end to abductions, hijackings and kidnappings for the purpose of releasing prisoners.

Swami Agnivesh has lost his credibility by supporting the Maoist demand. He has condemned the killing of policeman but did not say Maoists should release the policemen unconditionally. Other Maoist supporters did not have credibility.
