IPL and Pakistan

On 19 January 2010 during the IPL auction none of the 11 Pakistan players was picked up by any of the eight franchisee teams. This set off reactions in Pakistan.
Lalit Modi, IPL Commissioner, said teams did not select any Pakistan player and only one player from Australia was selected. Team owners said they were not convinced of the availability of Pakistani players for the entire season or they had some other players in mind and such things. It was clear it was decided beforehand not to bid for Pakistani players. Pakistani players had faced visa problems in December 2009. That was the foretaste of things to come. If Pakistani players were not to be selected they should not have been included in the list. Pakistani players were angry. Many Pakistanis were angry and considered it insult of Pakistan. Pakistan had won 2020 championship in 2009. Pakistan cancelled the visit of its parliamentary delegation to India. Pakistani sports minister spoke to India’s sports minister Mohinder Singh Gill who said IPL is a commercial enterprise and the government has nothing to do with it. Lalit Modi’s effigy was burnt in Pakistan.
The repercussions of not bidding for Pakistani players seem to affect many things other than cricket. There was talk of Pakistan boycotting Hockey World Cup in India but the idea was given up as it is a World Federation event. IPL telecast will not be allowed in Pakistan. There is demand to ban Indian films. Pakistan Kabaddi Federation cancelled India tour. Pakistan team was to play five matches in Inida.
Not many believe that the Government of India had nothing to do with the non-selection of Pakistani players. In 2009 Pakistan did not allow its players to play in IPL due to security reasons. If it had been announced before hand that Pakistani players will not be part of the auction due to security reasons it would not have been a problem. It could have been done in December by refusing visas. They were given visas after due date and were hopeful that they will be selected for IPL.
The controversy was avoidable. Care should be taken that such things do not happen in the future.

Donald George Bradman is the greatest batsman

After Sachin Tendulkar broke Brian Lara’s record of 11,953 Test runs some have said he is the greatest batsman.  They put him higher than Donald Bradman and Brian Lara.  I suppose it has to do with nationality than facts.

Donald Bradman scored 6,996 runs in 80 Innings, remained not out 10 times, of 52 Tests with an average of 99.94.  No batsman is closer to him in average.  Donald Bradman hit 29 centuries with two of them being triple centuries.  Besides these two triple centuries he hit 10 double centuries with one of them being 299 not out.

Brian Lara took 21 Tests less than Sachin Tendulkar to score 11,953 Test runs.  He broke the record of highest runs in a Test Innings twice.  He broke the record of 365 not out of Garfield Sobers and hit 375.  Matthew Hayden broke Brian Lara’s record and scored 380. Brian Lara broke that record and scored 400 not out.

Sachin Tendulkar has not hit any triple century.  Virender Sehwag has hit two triple centuries.

Sachin Tendulkar played in World Cups from 1992 to 2007.  India did not win any of them.  In 1996 Sachin Tendulkar played well and it was not his fault.  In other World Cups his performance was average.

If people say popularity of a batsman has to be criterion of greatness than there were many batsmen who were popular but did not do as well as Sachin Tendulkar.  Gundappa Vishwanath can be said to be greater than Sachin Tendulkar.

Batsmen are for scoring runs.  They have to be judged by the runs they score. Donald George Bradman is the greatest batsman.

Melbourne 2020

India lost the 2020 match against Australia. India batted first and were all out for 74 in 17.3 overs. They did not even last 20 overs. Australia scored 75 for one.

The players who were in the Test team and continued in 2020 and ODI teams should have done better. Players newly selected did not have enough time to adapt to Australian conditions.

Australian fielding was brilliant. Indian fielding was not good enough. Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan Singh clashed and dropped a catch.

From Tests to 2020 it is a difficult transformation and 2020 match should have been after ODI series.
