Google and Map of India

The government has told Google that its version of map of India is not correct and remove all such maps. When there are territorial disputes between countries, maps become controversial.

Parts of Jammu & Kashmir are under Pakistani and Chinese occupations. China claims Arunachal Pradesh as its territory and protests when Indian ministers or Dalai Lama go there. Google follows three maps policy. In India its India map shows India as the government wants it. In China its map shows Arunachal Pradesh, Aksai Chin and parts of Uttarakhand as part of China. Its world map shows Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir and parts of Uttarakhand and disputed territories.

Many publications and sites show maps as they are. When showing Jammu & Kashmir some show the Line of Control, territory under Pakistan and territory under China. It is no use blaming publications, sites or TV channels for showing reality.

India has diplomatic relations with China and Pakistan. If it feels bad about maps it should ask China and Pakistan to return the territories occupied by them and give up claims on Indian territories. There was time when Indian passports used to be stamped “Valid for all countries except Republic of South Africa and Colony of Rhodesia”. Later Rhodesia became Zimbabwe Colony of Rhodesia was deleted. With the end of apartheid the passport became valid for all countries. Till China and Pakistan return India’s territories Indian passports can have the words “Valid for all countries except China and Pakistan”.

WikiLeaks and India

WikiLeaks on 26/7/2010 made public many secret documents dealing with Afghan War. Some of them have relevance to India.

ISI played a role in terrorist activities against Indians. ISI paid the Taliban and Haqqani network to target Indians, Indian Embassy, Indian Consulate in Kandahar and other places. Indians have died. India has suffered loss of property.

It is futile to expect Pakistan to act against ISI or USA to do anything significant. India has to act on its own.

India should file chargesheets in Indian courts relating to attacks on Indians. ISI persons and their collaborators should be named in the chargesheets and should be summoned for interrogations. If they fail to turn up they should be declared persons Wanted Dead or Alive and rewards should be announced for persons who hand over wanted persons dead or alive. Ashfaq Kayani was head of ISI for three years. His term as army chief was to end in November 2010 has been extended by three years which reflects poorly on Pakistani army. Hamid Gul, former chief of ISI, played a role. Their names must be included.

Obama administration claims the documents relate to the period before he became president but he has continued the policy of previous administration. Afghan War is not popular in USA.

The documents show drones used by USA are not effective as they are not made out to be and crash many times. India should develop drones that do not crash.

Pakistan Cricket Board and cricketers

On 10/3/2010 PCB imposed bans and fines on seven cricketers: Mohammed Yusuf, Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik, Rana Naved, Shahid Afridi, Kamran Akmal and Umar Akmal. This followed Pakistan’s disastrous tour of Australia. During the tour Pakistan’s performance was poor and it appeared some players did their level best to lose the matches.
Was there match-fixing? ICC anti-corruption unit was present during the tour but that doesn’t mean much.
Did the players lose the matches because they did not like each other? Was there groupism? Whatever be the reasons the players had to be disciplined and PCB acted.
Some former players have expressed shock against actions cricketers saying there should no ban for poor performance. The actions of players show it was more than poor performance. It was sabotage. Action against Shahid Afridi may not have anything to do with ball tampering as ICC had acted against him.
CNN-IBN conducted a poll “Is Pakistani cricket team the most mismanaged in the world?” and 90% voted yes, 10% no.
Disagreements between players are not new in Test cricket. When disagreements result in losses that is a matter for concern and people in authority need to act and that is what PCB has done.
