Punjab witnessed two lynchings in two days. The victims were accused of sacrilege. On 18/12/2021 there was a lynching at Golden Temple, Amritsar. Politicians condemned sacrilege but no word of condemnation against lynching. Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said the culprit should not have been killed because he could have helped the authorities to get to the bottom of the conspiracy.
On 19/12/2021 there was a lynching at Nizampur village, Kapurthala District. This took place in police presence. IGP Gurbinder Singh Dhillon said there was no proof of sacrilege at gurudwara. DGP Siddhartha Chattopadhyaya said there was no sacrilege at Kapurthala. Politicians did not condemn lynching.
There are FIRs against dead persons but not against who killed them. Soon it will be election time in Punjab.
When farmers were agitating against farm laws, there was a lynching near Delhi border. Some killers had surrendered.
Lynchings have taken place in UP, Jharkhand and Rajasthan. The victims were accused of beef eating, cattle smuggling or theft. Before that, panchayats lynched couples who married outside caste or within clan.
In Pakistan mobs lynch on the accusation of blasphemy. Recently one Sri Lankan was lynched.
Law should take its course. Criminals should be punished. Mobs feel they can get away with anything. Blocking roads and trains, declaring bandhs and forcing shutdowns have gone unpunished. State governments should uphold law. Mobs should not have feelings of impunity.
A glimpse of what will be a normal occurrence soon?
When religion becomes the guiding force of politics, any nation will degenerate into inhuman activities. India is on the highway of that degeneration from 2014 onwards.
