Catholic Church and Holocaust

At the end of January 2009 Benedict XVI lifted the excommunication on four bishops belonging to Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) consecrated by Marcel Lefebvre. This followed Unity Octave on 18-25 January during which many Christians pray for Christian Unity. Soon afterwards Richard Williamson, one of the four bishops of SSPX, was embroiled in a controversy regarding his view about Holocaust. His view was that the Jews killed during Holocaust were 300,000 and not 6,000,000 and nobody died in gas chambers. This caused outrage. Vatican contradicted Richard Williamson. Bernard Fellay, Superior General of SSPX, said it was Richard Williamson’s personal view and not of SSPX. Richard Williamson apologized for his “imprudent” statement.

Some people have criticized Richard Williamson and asked for his expulsion. While the excommunication on four bishops is lifted they are not received in the Catholic Church. So there is no question of expulsion or excommunication.

Six million is a round figure and the exact number of Jews killed could be more or less than that. Holocaust has nothing to do with any dogma, doctrine, belief or practice of the Catholic Church. Canon Law prescribes excommunication as punishment for certain crimes and the contradicting the belief that 6,000,000 Jews died during Holocaust is not one of them.

Western countries talk about freedom of speech and expression but when it is the question of Holocaust they turn dogmatic. Whenever someone questions Holocaust he/she should be given exact figures with dates and places. Saying millions and millions died will not help.

Abortion is punishable with excommunication. How many have been excommunicated for abortion? What have the Bishops of USA done about it?

The Jews have killed various peoples over the centuries. From the time of Joshua to David they destroyed many tribes. The Old Testament mentions them. Since the founding of Israel many Palestinians were dispossessed. Israel has killed many innocent people over the years. Recently someone compared Gaza to Nazi concentration camp. Israel does not care about any criticism of its actions. Israel has a right to defend itself but no right to kill people randomly.

Richard Williamson is British. His country fought against Germany in World War II. His nationality cannot be the reason for his view. Mel Gibson’s father’s view was similar to that of Richard Williamson: many people died in World War II, some of them were Jews.

During World War II many crimes were committed by UK, USA and USSR. They are not mentioned and condemned like Holocaust. The British dropped incendiary bombs on Dresden which killed many women and children. USA dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Russian soldiers raped two million women in Germany. Nobody belonging to UK, USA and USSR was punished for war crimes.

It is the British who began concentration camps against Boers in South Africa. There is no condemnation of the British for their atrocities against Boers.

It is necessary for Catholics, especially bishops, to have proper perspective regarding Holocaust and other crimes. Acceptance or denial of Holocaust should not be a criterion for entry or membership of Roman Catholic Church.

Attack on Christians in Karanataka

On 7/9/2008, Sunday, some churches were attacked in Davanagere.

On 14/9/2008, Sunday, some churches were attacked in Mangalore, Udupi and Chickmaglur.

It was the last day of three day BJP national convention in Bangalore.

Christians in Mangalore have been there for centuries.

Attack on churches in the centre of the city was unimaginable.

These events follow the events in Orissa.

Karnataka has a BJP government, so it is free reign for Bajrang Dal, VHP and similar groups.

When Christians protest attacks on churches there is lathi charge and tear gas.

It is time for Christians in Karnataka to shake off complacency and be prepared for any eventuality to defend themselves.

Christians, especially priests, nuns, seminarians and religious brothers, should learn judo, karate and other arts of self-defence.

Central Government did not convey a tough message to Orissa Government and now there is violence in Karnataka.

Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil is known for changing his clothes instead of paying attention to the problems.

After Delhi blasts this was clear to all.

One TV channel said he is not Home Minister but Textile Minister.

He reminds me of an emperor who was fond of clothes and was fooled by two people who got lot of money for the non-existent dress and ultimately a child said “The Emperor is naked.” Governments have to function according to the constitution.

If they do not, they have to be dismissed.

In 1992 after the demolition of Babri Mosque, Governments of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan were dismissed for not adhering to the constitution and the dismissal was upheld by the Supreme Court.

Orissa and Karnataka Governments must be dismissed.

Atrocities in Orissa

The atrocities against Christians in Orissa need to be dealth with swiftly.

Criminals must be punished.

Christians were targetted for what Maoists had done.

Many Christians were murdered.

Many more suffered injuries, their houses were burnt, property looted.

Rule of law must prevail.

There was a rally at Azad Maidan, Bombay, on 7/9/2008.

Raphael Cheenath, Archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubhaneshwar, Swami Agnivesh and many others participated.

Swami Agnivesh while talking to TV reporters called for the arrest of Praveen Togadia and ban on VHP and Bajrang Dal similar to SIMI.

Later Raphael Cheenath appeared on the RKB Show of Sahara Samay.

He spoke of the plight of Christians in Orissa.

Police did not do anything to prevent crimes and catch criminals.

Some told priests and nuns to run away as they would not be able to protect them.

One nun was gangraped in the presence of 10 policemen.

The priest who tried to protect her was beaten.

The archbishop cannot visit his flock.

Praveen Togadia can go wherever he wants.

Police stations are controlled by VHP.

The RKB Show received many messages by SMS and E-Mail, 95% of which condemned the events in Orissa.

It is time for Christians in Orissa and other parts of India to be prepared for any eventuality and defend themselves.

Christians should learn judo, karate and other arts of self-defence.

India is the largest mobocracy in the world.

Christians should not expect anyone to help them.

State Governments cannot be expected to maintain law and order.

Maoists have threatened to kill many VHP members.

Every death penalty prevents three to eighteen murders.

Murderers must be put to death.

Other crimes also must have swift punishments.

Christianity is a religion of love and peace.

Christians who are persecuted can make the following prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, you converted Saul, persecutor of Christians, and made him Paul, your missionary.

We pray that you turn members of RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal, our persecutors, and make them your missionaries.”
