UK Elections 2017

A bird in hand is worth two in bush.
A week is a long time in politics.
Never count your chickens before they are hatched.
The best laid plans of men and mice go awry.
Theresa May’s announcement on 18 April 2017 of her decision to call election to House of Commons on 8 June 2017 was a surprise as the House was elected on 7 May 2015 and had three years left. Just a few days before she had said she will not call for early elections. More surprising was the fact that 522 members of House of Commons on 19 April 2017 voted for early election.
Opinion polls had given 20-point lead to Theresa May. She relied on them and hoped she could return with a bigger majority. Jeremy Corbyn, leader of Labour Party, could have opposed early election. He too went along. Scottish National Party abstained from voting.
Opinion polls are unreliable. They were wrong about UK Elections 2015, Brexit referendum, and USA Presidential Election 2016. It is reckless to go for early elections. Arvind Kejriwal did that in 2014 after 49 days in office. He hoped Delhi Legislative Assembly elections will be held together with Lok Sabha 2014 elections. That did not happen. Mahindra Rajapaksa did that at the end of 2014 and lost the election in the beginning of January 2015. He had more than two years left. There is no guarantee that Theresa May will return as PM, leave alone with a higher majority. It is wrong to consider Theresa May as clever, rational and shrewd. It is said David Cameron calling for Brexit referendum was ultimate gamble of ultimate gambler.
Theresa May blamed opposition parties in House of Commons and House of Lords for jeopardising Brexit negotiations. House of Lords can only delay a bill. House of Commons can reject changes proposed by House of Lords. Conservative Party with its majority in House of Commons could have carried out Brexit negotiations.
Scotland and Northern Ireland opposed Brexit. SNP wants Scotland out of UK. Theresa May had not granted referendum on Scottish Independence. In 2015 SNP won 56 seats out of 59 in Scotland. If SNP repeats its performance demand for referendum will be hard to reject.
Some EU officials hope after elections UK will reverse its stand on Brexit.
On 9 June 2015 we will know how many of 522 MPs who voted for early election have returned to House of Commons.

New India

After BJP’s victory in UP and Uttarakhand and cobbled coalition governments in Goa and Manipur, Narendra Modi has talked of New India. We have some indication what is this New India.
It will be a vegetarian India. There will be a ban on meat, fish, eggs, crabs, lobsters, oysters, shellfish, and so on. When Jains fast or feast there will be a ban on onions, garlic, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, ginger, other root vegetables, and honey.
Yoga will be compulsory.
Sanskrit will be compulsory.
There will be name changes. Names like Allahabad, Aurangabad, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Murshidabad, Sahibabad, Tughlakabad, Babur Road, Humayun Road, Akbar Road, will be replaced with names pleasing to RSS. Names of airports and institutes with members of Nehru-Gandhi family will be changed to that of BJP and RSS leaders.
Text books will mention glory of ancient India. Everything was discovered or invented by Indians.
There will be a ban on disco, foxtrot, jive, twist, or any western dance.
There will be a ban on jazz, pop, rock, or any western music.
There will be a ban on accordion, bagpipe, clarinet, cornet, guitar, mandolin, piano, saxophone, trombone, violin, xylophone, and other western musical instruments.
There will be a ban on Valentine’s Day celebration. Prem Din may be celebrated.
Cow will replace tiger as national animal. It will be death penalty or life imprisonment for killing a cow.
Hindi film award programmes will have to be in Hindi.
CBFC will not certify films with kissing and nude scenes.
Polygyny and polygamy will be allowed. A man can have many wives. A woman can have many husbands. A married woman should have at least three children, seventeen will be better.
Manusmriti will replace Constitution. Women will lose many rights. A woman will have to be under her father or husband or son. Marriage outside one’s social class will be forbidden. B. R. Ambedkar had burnt a copy of Manusmriti on 25/12/1927 at Mahad. He had held it responsible for caste system and Dalit oppression in India.

Meat ban

On 19/3/2017 Yogi Adityanath became UP CM. Soon there was meat ban in UP. Now BJP governments in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, MP, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand have imposed meat ban. Officially the governments claim they are against illegal slaughterhouses. In reality all slaughterhouses are shut down.
BJP wants India to become a Hindu nation. For BJP vegetarianism is part of Hinduism. Many Hindus eat meat, fish and eggs. BJP had governments in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, MP, Rajasthan, and Uttarakhand before. They did not impose meat ban before. Victory in UP gave BJP confidence to pursue its hidden agenda of vegetarianism. Fish ban and egg ban is a matter of time. There will be ban on cakes, candies, chocolates and cookies.
BJP government in MP had stopped eggs as part of mid-day meals. In Maharashtra, BJP banned buffalo meat. Shiv Sena opposed meat ban during Paryushan.
BJP talks development of all. By all it means vegetarian Hindus. Muslims, Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians, and Bahais are excluded. BJP considers Buddhists, Jains and Sikhs as Hindus. Jains are vegetarians and abstain from root vegetables and honey. Buddhists and Sikhs are free to eat meat.
Meat ban has economic and other consequences. Many will lose income and jobs. Prices of vegetables will go up. Many will lose their favourite food. Unemployment will lead to problems. Animals will be left on the roads. Some will destroy crops. Environment Ministry permitted killing of blue bulls (nilgais) in Bihar because they were destroying crops.
BJP wants to impose yoga, Sanskrit and vegetarianism. It will not rest with constructing a few temples. It wants ban on burial of the dead and wants cremation for all. Many Hindus bury their dead. MGR was buried. Kannada actor Rajkumar was buried. Jayalalitha’s tomb is visited by her followers. Cremation causes pollution.
In 2014 during Lok Sabha campaign Narendra Modi had talked against Pink Revolution. This time in UP, Muslims were his targets. “If a village has a cemetery it should also have a crematorium. If there is electricity for Ramzan it should be there for Diwali.”
RSS pracharaks, babas, sadhvis and yogis becoming ministers leads to imposition of their religious views on others. In Haryana, Uttarakhand, and UP, BJP did not declare its CM candidates beforehand. In UP, Yogi Adityanath had not contested as an MLA. Till Yogi Adityanath becomes an MLA or MLC in UP, it is the tyranny of the unelected in UP.
